A Thought-Provoking Session on Intellectual Property and SMEs

On Tuesday 7th December 2021, the SME Western 4.0 group gathered for their regular breakfast to network with other SMEs and discuss the topic of Intellectual Property and SMEs. This was the first breakfast to be held at the new Parramatta Engineering Innovation Hub – Launch Pad’s new home.

Even with the multiple strikes that clashes with our event (train strikes, bus strikes and teacher strikes) we had a good turnout for our last Western 4.0 Breakfast for the year.

Guest keynote speaker Dr Justin Blows from Phoenix Intellectual Property, spoke ‘The SME Intellectual Property Handbook’ – understanding the basics of intellectual property and covered the following topics:

  • How businesses use resources to make money
  • Which resources are the most important?
  • What is Intellectual property
  • How intellectual property increases profit and company value
  • Evidence from economists demonstrating value of intellectual property
Dr Justin Blows uncovered the potential for SMEs to increase export with the implementation on trademarks for international trade, which gave our attendees something to think about.

The breakfast was concluded with a roundtable discussion on topics to cover in our future breakfasts in 2022. There was a keen interest in areas such as cyber security, information on grants, application on new technologies, collaboration opportunities with Western Sydney University and case studies from other SMEs.
