AI for Impact:

Cambodian Students Lead the Way for a Sustainable Future

On Wednesday, October 16, Phnom Penh became a hub of creativity and innovation as Cambodia’s brightest high school students gathered for a one-day challenge that could shape their future—and ours.

The Innovation Challenge, AI for Impact: How Can We Use AI for Positive Sustainable Social Change?”, saw 21 teams of 81 students compete to develop AI-driven solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues.

Organised by Western Sydney University International and Launch Pad Technology Business Incubator, this event wasn’t just a competition—it was a transformative experience, pushing young minds to think critically and use AI as a tool for global change.

The Impact of AI on Sustainable Change

Mentored by business professionals, the participants explored how AI could be applied to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. From smart clean water systems to AI-powered platforms addressing agriculture issues, the ideas presented demonstrated a deep understanding of how AI could be leveraged to create a positive societal impact. As one participant aptly summed up:

“The innovation challenge has crafted and brought the best of humanity, to solve world problems.”

The future is bright in Cambodia, and AI is the tool that will help these students lead the way toward a more sustainable, equitable world.

Innovating for Global Impact

The challenge posed to students was both simple and profound:

“How can we harness the power of artificial intelligence to create a positive, sustainable social impact?”

For these young innovators, the question was an invitation to think beyond their local environment and develop ideas that could potentially make a global difference. AI’s growing influence in everyday life was not lost on these students, who recognised both the potential and responsibility that comes with such technology.

Limitless Creativity and Bold Solutions

The atmosphere was electric with possibilities. For many, it was the first time they had the opportunity to use AI in such a meaningful way, and the solutions that emerged were nothing short of inspiring. Whether it was improving education systems, tackling environmental issues, or finding new ways to address healthcare challenges, the students approached each problem with innovation and passion. One student shared:

“I like how I use my intuition to come up with solutions for global issues.”

For another, the challenge was a doorway to unlocking a new way of thinking:

“This experience is one of, if not my favorite experience so far when it comes to education. It taught me many new things and taught my brain how to think of innovative and teamwork-based projects.”

The teams didn’t just develop ideas—they developed solutions that could become real-world applications, with each project focusing on a unique aspect of sustainable development.
