Learning, Thinking, and Global Collaboration: How Japan Changed Rafael's Perspective

Stepping Into a Global Experience

Participating in the Venture Makers Global Exchange Program in Japan was an incredibly valuable academic and cultural experience for me. As a student from Western Sydney University, I was motivated to join the program because I wanted to gain international exposure, collaborate with students from different countries, and learn how innovation and entrepreneurship are approached in Japan. I was particularly interested in understanding how global teams can work together to solve real-world problems while also experiencing Japanese culture and society firsthand.

Collaborating Across Cultures

During my stay in Japan, I learned many important lessons about cross-cultural teamwork, problem solving, and global collaboration. One of the highlights of the program was working with an international group of students on a project focused on improving the tourist experience between Kobe and Arima Onsen, a famous hot spring destination. Through research and discussion, we analysed the challenges tourists face when navigating the railway journey and explored how technology could make the trip easier, more comfortable, and more enjoyable. Presenting our ideas during the Global Conference allowed us to share our solutions and learn from the perspectives of other teams. Beyond the academic aspect, the program also helped me appreciate Japanese culture, hospitality, and the importance of attention to detail in both business and daily life.

Navigating Challenges in Global Teamwork

Like many international collaborative projects, we faced several challenges. One difficulty was coordinating ideas within a diverse team where members came from different cultural and academic backgrounds. Sometimes our communication styles and approaches to problem solving were different. However, by being open-minded, listening carefully to each other’s ideas, and dividing responsibilities effectively, we were able to work productively as a team. These challenges ultimately strengthened our collaboration skills and taught us how important adaptability and communication are in global teamwork.

Looking Ahead

Looking forward, I hope to apply what I learned in this program to my future academic and professional development. The experience strengthened my confidence in working within international teams and inspired me to continue exploring innovation, entrepreneurship, and global problem solving. I also hope to share my experience with other students at my university to encourage them to participate in international exchange opportunities. The program not only expanded my academic knowledge but also helped me build meaningful friendships and a broader global perspective that will stay with me throughout my career.
