500 Future Innovators: Why Western Students Are Embracing Entrepreneurship Early
With industries evolving faster than ever, students today need more than just knowledge—they need creativity, adaptability, and an entrepreneurial mindset from day one. Innovation isn’t just for entrepreneurs; it’s a must-have skill for every student, no matter their field of study. That’s why Launch Pad, Western Sydney University’s technology incubator, took center stage during this year’s Welcome Week, inspiring students to embrace innovation early and see its impact on their future success.
From engineering to business, health to the arts, every industry is being reshaped by new technologies and bold ideas. The students who start innovating early—experimenting with new concepts, collaborating across disciplines, and challenging the status quo—are the ones who will thrive in the workforce of the future.
At the heart of the event was the Innovation Playground, an interactive space designed by the Launch Pad team that captivated over 500 students. More than just a showcase, it was a hands-on experience where students could test ideas, explore emerging technologies, and spark their entrepreneurial mindset—whether they dream of launching a startup or simply want to future-proof their careers.

The Innovation Playground:
A Hub of Engagement and Learning
The Innovation Playground featured 4 play stations, each offering something unique to engage students, inspire learning, and allow them to have fun while discovering the world of innovation and entrepreneurship. From AI-powered challenges to interactive flight simulators, these stations gave students a taste of what the future holds—and how they can be a part of it.
Fly Western Sydney XR
For students who dreamed of flying, the Fly Western Sydney XR station was a highlight. Using XR (Mixed Reality) technology, students could try out a flight simulator that showcased the suburbs of Western Sydney. It was an immersive experience that not only allowed students to have fun but also introduced them to the potential of XR technology in education, training, and entertainment.
AI Brainbot Station
At the AI Brainbot Station, students were tasked with an innovative challenge where they utilised AI to brainstorm and visualise new products and services.
This interactive session got students thinking about the future of technology and how AI can be harnessed to address real-world problems, all while giving them hands-on experience with cutting-edge tools.
Factory of the Future
At the Factory of the Future station, students learned about the incredible capabilities of modern manufacturing, including the use of 3D printers and robotics. It was an eye-opening experience for many as they saw how technology is transforming industries. They were introduced to “Wolfie,” the robot wolf, and explored other futuristic tools available to students at Western Sydney University. This station provided an informative look at the intersection of technology and real-world applications in the manufacturing sector.
