Just Hit Post: Content Creation Workshop with Nisal Nimesha

Our latest Side Hustle Circle event brought a fresh perspective — and plenty of practical advice — thanks to WSU student and content creator Nisal Nimesha.

From YouTube in Sri Lanka to WSU’s Social Media Team

Nisal kicked things off by sharing his story. What began as casual YouTube videos in Sri Lanka —  just for fun — soon became a digital journal of his life. Inspired by creators like David Dobrik, Nisal experimented with platforms such as TikTok, LinkedIn, and Instagram, each one opening new opportunities.

His passion for creating eventually led him to a role with WSU’s official social media team, along with experience across clubs and student groups on campus.

Learning the Content Creation Process

To keep the session interactive, Nisal ran live polls to see where students were in their own content journeys. He then broke down the different types of content creators can make, emphasising that being on camera isn’t the only path — voiceovers, photography, or even behind-the-scenes work can be just as effective.

His three key tips for anyone starting out:

  1. Keep it simple — don’t overcomplicate things.
  2. If it helps one person, post it.
  3. Get inspiration online — you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.

Personalised Feedback and Confidence Building

The second half of the workshop gave students a chance to get one-on-one feedback with Nisal. Topics ranged from overcoming identity barriers and choosing the right platforms, to building confidence and finding a unique voice online.

“Nisal's insights based on his own experience on niche, audience as well as content format was valuable. My biggest takeaway is to post whatever format seems the simplest at this stage and to try other formats progressively”

"I found the “why” Nisal does what he does very motivating, and how it has brought him a lot of opportunities by building a personal brand. The biggest takeaway is “If you can help/entertain 1 person” the video is worth posting."

A Student-Led Event for Side Hustlers

This workshop was part of the Side Hustle Circle — a community for Western Sydney students working on side hustles and building confidence in the passion economy.

What made this event especially powerful was that it was student-led. Nisal, while currently pursuing a degree in medicine, continues to grow his side hustle as a content creator — proving that with passion and persistence, you really can do anything.

At Side Hustle Series, participants can join industry experts, mentors, and peers to gain practical skills, guidance, and inspiration.

From idea generation to branding and marketing, we empower participants to build a successful side hustle.
