From Startups to Subway Maps: Finding Confidence in a New Environment

Why I Chose Japan

I participated in the Go Global Venture Makers Study Tour in Japan because I have a strong interest in entrepreneurship, startups, Japanese culture, and technology. Japan is known for its innovation, efficiency, and advanced technology, and I wanted to experience this environment and learn how businesses and startups operate in Japan. Another important motivation for me was to build networks and connections with students, professionals, and organizations, which could be useful for my future career and business opportunities.

Developing Skills Through Experience

During my stay in Japan, I learned many valuable skills and lessons. One of the most important things I learned was teamwork and communication. Our group had students with different personalities, ideas, and working styles, so it was important to communicate clearly and work together effectively. I also learned pitching and presentation skills, where we had to present business ideas and solutions. This experience helped me improve my confidence when presenting ideas in front of an audience. In addition, we conducted field research, which helped me understand how businesses operate in real environments and how to analyze customer behavior, locations, and market opportunities.

Challenges Along the Way

There were also some challenges during the program. One of the biggest challenges was navigating the Japanese railway and subway system and finding locations. The transport system in Japan is very efficient but also complex for first-time visitors. Another challenge was the language barrier, as not everyone spoke English, which sometimes made communication difficult. However, I dealt with these challenges by using Google Maps, translation apps, asking for help from locals, and working together with my team members. These challenges helped me become more independent, adaptable, and confident in a new environment.

Applying These Lessons Beyond Japan

In the future, I would like to use what I learned from this program in my career and personal development. The communication and networking skills I developed will be very useful in my professional career. I am also interested in starting an engineering or technology-related startup in the future, and this program gave me exposure to entrepreneurship and business idea development. Additionally, I hope to build future partnerships or collaborations with Japanese companies or organizations. Overall, this program was a very valuable experience that helped me grow personally and professionally, and I am very grateful for the opportunity to participate.
