Research Collaboration with Western Sydney Manufacturer, Bitzer Australia, to Drive Local Innovation

Through the Western 4.0 advanced manufacturing innovation cluster, Launch Pad is supporting Bitzer Australia, an 80-year-old compressor and refrigeration technology leader in Western Sydney to transform its business through an ambitious innovation agenda to compete against increasing competition from low-cost countries.

Bitzer is focusing on creating a point of difference in the market through the adoption of Industry 4.0 principles and the circular economy. From this focus, a collaborative research project with Western Sydney University’s (WSU) research team has deepened the relationship.

The research collaboration partnership with Bitzer will focus on engineering a new modularised rack system for their compressor units. This will involve exploring new and innovative concepts of steel parallel racks for their full range of compressors.

Currently, the company has three different varieties of parallel racks for compressors, Mini, Maxi and Screw. Bitzer seeks to move to a more modularised version of parallel racks.

Phase 1 of this project will develop several concepts of new racks, as well as recommendations of preferred concepts.

Led by Professor Richard Yang, the Western Sydney University research team including Dr Leo Zhang, Dr Helen Wu, Professor Sarah Zhang as Chief Investigators are each focusing on certain aspects of the project. Two research assistants will also help work on the project and develop the report to collate Phase 1.

This project will serve as an excellent exemplar for other manufacturing businesses in the region seeking to also transform as a means of building global competitiveness and sustainability.

One of the ways we do this is by offering WSU resources, including facilities and talents, to work on any Research and Development (R&D) projects that help SMEs drive innovation. The university resourceful with many qualified, experienced, and distinguished researchers ready to help tackle these R&D projects. Certain projects also open room to welcome student talents in for skill development and real-world R&D experience for studying students.
