What Should I Build? Finding Direction Through Global Experience

What is your story?

The idea of building something of my own has always stayed with me whether it be a small farmhouse or a multinational company. Growing up, I watched my parents work on their venture starting from nothing to building their dreams through sheer hardwork and determination. As a child, I admired their resilience without fully understanding it and now as I navigate my adulthood, that journey has become a source of deep inspiration.

Yet one question always lingered: what should I build? As someone curious about almost everything, I often found myself drawn in multiple directions but never certain where to begin. It was during this time of uncertainty that I came across Venture Makers Global Exchange Program through LaunchPad. Something about it stood out to me. It felt like an opportunity that could help me explore my interests and perhaps bring me closer to discovering what I truly wanted.

Moving from Nepal to Australia for my higher studies had already shifted my perspective. I became more comfortable expressing my ideas, engaging in discussions and embracing openness in communication. However, travelling to Japan introduced me to an entirely different way of thinking. Despite language barriers and cultural differences, what fascinated me most was how seamlessly innovation and tradition coexisted. Experiencing one of the world’s leading technological economies alongside deeply rooted cultural practices gave me a new appreciation for how differently people approach creativity, work, and progress.

One of the biggest takeaways from this journey was the importance of cross-cultural understanding. I began to notice how even the smallest details whether in communication, design or daily interactions reflect deep cultural values. It made me realize that a brand or idea is never just a product or a service but also a reflection of identity, habits and mindset of the people behind it.

What was the experience like in the program?

Throughout the program, I had the opportunity to engage in wide range of sessions that expanded both my understanding of entrepreneurship and my appreciation for diversity. Collaborating with participants from six different universities around the world challenged me to listen more actively, adapt my communication style and express my ideas more thoughtfully.

The industry exposure was equally impactful. Corporate workshops with companies such as Fujicco and Kobe Electric Railway offered insights into real world business practices and innovation. A panel discussion featuring local startups was particularly inspiring. It helped me reinforce the idea that every concept holds value and it simply requires the courage to begin.

What did you experience outside the program?

Beyond the classroom, site visits added another dimension to the experience. Visiting Awaji Island with Pasona Group and learning about regional revitalization showed me how innovation can transform entire communities. Exploring spaces like JAMBASE in Osaka highlighted the energy and dynamism of Japan’s entrepreneurial ecosystem. At the same time, visits to places such as The Great Hanshin – Awaji Earthquake Memorial Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution served as powerful moments of reflection reminding me of the resilience embedded within Japanese society.

How did pitching go?

The final pitching session was a defining moment. Presenting our ideas in front of real companies and investors was both nerve-racking and rewarding. It pushed me beyond my comfort zone and allowed me to apply everything I had learned throughout the program.

Final Thoughts

Looking back, these two weeks have been remarkable in ways I never expected. What made this experience truly unforgettable were the people. From uncertainty to clarity, unfamiliar faces to lifelong friendships and from stepping into a new culture to embracing it wholeheartedly, this experience has left a lasting impact on me.

While I may still be exploring what exactly I want to build, I feel more confident now that I have started and it is what matters the most! I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Kansai University of International Studies, LaunchPad at Western Sydney University, Innovation Dojo and Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT).
