Digital Healthcare Challenge 2023

Launch Pad hosted the Digital Healthcare Innovation Challenge on 7 October 2023!

The Innovation Challenge put students in the driver’s seat to co-design interactive electronic health records to enhance preparation for practice in healthcare . Apart from the outcome of the challenge, the skills learnt in this challenge would be valuable for students whether they become an employee for any organisation or choose to become an innovator, inventor or entrepreneur.

In this ONE DAY challenge, students from the School of Nursing and Midwifery, School of Computer, Data and Mathematical Sciences & School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment worked together to explore how we could develop a simulated electronic medical records (EMR) that can be used as a teaching tool for our undergraduate students.

The Challenge Question

“How do we digitise medical records so that they simulate what we will interact with in the workforce?”

Nursing students attend compulsory on-campus clinical practice units (CPUs) sessions as part of their studies. The CPUs must provide environments that emulate the clinical setting. Despite being introduced in healthcare settings, we do not have access to any form of electronic medical records (EMR). EMR is a crucial requirement of the pre-registration of health professionals, particularly nursing. Systems for health care providers do not provide a practice environment. Using simulated medical records in preparation for work-integrated learning would enhance our student’s work readiness.

Participants worked with specialist mentors from startups and industry to help them develop ideas that apply advanced technology concepts while working in a real-world environment.
